Reflection:

When I began working in the media center, I noticed that students were forging passes.  "Skipping" class is a huge issue at our school so  I knew that  I had to do something to combat this issue.  I talked with several other media specialists and read articles in the School Library Journal.  Many other media specialists were using paper passes.  Some laminated the passes and changed the colors.  I knew that this was a waste of resources.  I hate wasting paper and I talked to my principal and he said, "Use technology." Next, I went to our Local School Technology Coordinator, and she showed me a program that she uses to manage the laptop carts.  Using this system, teachers would have to make a reservation for their students to come to the media center.  I loved the idea!  I pulled up a read only copy for my Library Science Students so that they could serve as a concierge.  I supplied teachers with a link to the calendar that allows them to reserve but not edit other teachers reservations.  We pushed it out and many teachers were upset and said it was too much work.  So, they decided to keep their students in class.  This helped because only students who really needed to be there were being sent to the media center.  Many teachers like the idea and immediately stepped up to the challenge.  Although there were a group who disliked the idea, I was steadfast and I followed through with instruction step by step handouts.  I even trained my students so that they could serve as ambassadors and go out and teach teachers. A year later and I am proud to say that everyone is on board .  Everyone knows you have to have an electronic pass to get in the media center.  Students no longer forge pass because they know we don't accept paper passes.  The link is secure because it is housed on a teacher only page.  Teachers can also reserve spaces in the media center for their classes without having to wait on me to get back to them unless they want me to teach their class.
