Candidate as Teacher
Reflection:
I hosted a Black History Book Tasting in the media center with a Junior Language Arts class using Banned Books by African -American authors. I used this time to highlight new books we had added to our collection by African American authors.
I began by introducing a few of the books that I had read and loved. I talked about the books with the students and shared why I loved the books.

Next, I allowed the students to sit at tables that I had decorated to look like a restaurant. I had a score sheet for the students to rate the books and take notes.
Next ,the students had to create a book trailer sharing information about the books. They had to include the author’s name, title of the book, brief summary, and any other information pertinent to the book. I also had samples of food from African American culture for the teachers and students to sample.
I really enjoyed the unit and many teachers posted about it on social media or contacted me via email to say how much they enjoyed the lesson. It is very important to promote cultural heritage among our students and I was proud to do it. This lesson also gave me chance to flex my teacher skills. As a former Language Arts teacher, I love teaching and I love sharing the joy of reading.
