I visited Mr. Kyle Flemish in his space at Simonton Elementary to experience elementary
school. I have a new respect for elementary media specialists! They do so much! I love the aesthetics of the place too. There is a huge reading tree house in the media center. This is a place for students to read if their teacher gives them permission. Mr. Flemish has been the media specialsit at Simonton for 3 years but he was a teacher there for 11 years. His story is similar to mine as I was a classroom teacher at Meadowcreek until my principal gave me an opportunity to work in the media center. He has nominated for a leadership award for his tech team innovative practices.
Some exciting things I noticed....
Alexa- Mr. Flemish purchased Alexa for the students. He created a booth and students can ask Alexa questions. He sometimes provides sample questions for classes based on the units they are studying. His TST created a guest pass for the year to be able to put wifi on Alexa. You can also add your own features like math facts and trivia.
Community coloring station- Mr. Flemish uses this station to teach about endangered species. The coloring sheets have facts on the back.
Hologram keyboard-Students use this keyboard to search for books on Destiny Quest.
I felt overwhelmed but motivated when I left. There is so much that I want to do in my media center but it seems like I never have time. Time management is a big issue for me because I don't have a clerk. Mr. Flemish has an awesome clerk. She does read alouds and so much more. I have Library Science students and they help me so much.
